Developed through a unique partnership between education and industry, the Kawartha Skilled Trades Institute (“KSTI”) will provide a teaching and retraining facility for students from regional secondary schools, Fleming College and regional industry.
This 95,000 square foot education centre will provide training in a variety of traditional and emerging trades and technology fields. The centre puts learning on display, acting as a showcase of construction details to provide an interactive teaching environment. As an example, connection details will be left exposed, allowing teachers to use them as design aides.
The main entrance canopy cantilevers 45 feet and is constructed using an ultra-thin post tensioned concrete slab. The principal classroom area features 120 foot wide open spaces with custom fabricated long span steel trusses, allowing for collaborative project assembly. The second floor level is constructed using cast in place concrete and contains Smart-wired classrooms, high technology labs, meeting rooms and office areas.
