This student residence accommodates over 250 students in a double-winged five-storey structure. The two wings are connected by a central core. There is a student lounge on each level and a one-storey commons room that features long span exposed glue-lam beams with wood deck.
Materials were carefully selected to withstand considerable wear and tear by students while making a strong architectural statement. Interiors feature a rugged mix of Niagara stone and natural wood. To highlight the two-winged design, the exterior has horizontal bands of brick and block contrasting sharply with the fully glazed south façade. To accomplish this, the structure was constructed of poured in place reinforced one way slabs supported on shear walls.
Challenges on this project included an extremely restricted work site and a demanding fast-track schedule.
This project was awarded the 2003 Ontario Concrete Awards Honourable Mention for Architectural Merit.
