The Weldrick Bridge has won an IES Illumination Awards. The IES awards recognize ingenuity and originality in lighting. The parent organization seeks to improve the lighted environment by bringing together those with lighting knowledge and translating that knowledge into actions that benefit the public.
Located in Richmond Hill the Weldrick Bridge is a new 100 foot long by 8 foot wide pedestrian bridge. The bridge was designed to replace an existing deteriorated bridge spanning from the Weldrick Street sidewalk to the east side of the German Mills Creek in Richmond Hill. Working in collaboration with the artist consultant and landscape architect, Stephenson Engineering provided structural drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for the bridge.
The Bridge is a unique, sustainable and innovative design. Public art is integrated with infrastructure in a manner that visually enriches the environment while an astronomical theme affiliates the bridge with the significant, nearby David Dunlap Observatory. Constellation names are etched into the bridge deck and star-shaped apertures in the bridge panels glow at night evoking a starry night sky.
In addition to the IES award the Weldrick Bridge has also won an award from Parks and Recreation Ontario.
